The incident unfolded in front of The Spot on East Main Street in Ansonia on Saturday, March 1. A man reported that he was in a minor car crash, where the other driver turned aggressive.
According to police, the woman involved in the crash allegedly yelled at the victim before stealing his wallet and phone. The victim was not injured, but instead of getting help, he was met with a crowd that watched — and recorded — the ordeal.
A video of the robbery quickly spread on social media, prompting a strong response from Ansonia Police Chief Wayne Williams.
“We are also aware of the social media video of this incident that is circulating. We would encourage people to stop sharing this video which revictimizes the victim in this case and sensationalizes the ridiculous actions of those involved,” Williams said.
He didn’t stop there.
Instead of videotaping this robbery of a defenseless victim, responsible citizens should call 911. In this case, with all of the bar patrons standing outside, NOBODY called the police or helped the victim. We are better than this.
The community response in the days following the robbery has been more fruitful. The department says they’ve received numerous tips and are actively working to identify everyone involved. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.
